Viewing aspects of the world around us in a “simpler” or stripped down point of view can add a new layer of context or meaning to the subject. With that in mind, my intention with this series is to present emotion and feeling based on the core visuals of mundane or everyday surroundings. The nine images presented here are semi-autobiographical, and convey personal attachment and feeling to what was evoking emotion in me at that place and time. There is no linear dialogue or narrative to be told, but the colour and shape are to overwhelm and provide a basis for connection with the viewer in whichever way they feel to. The lack of certainty or realism forces the viewer to think abstractly and therefore strip down what they might know of the image and construct a new point of view for themselves.
The images in this series were all taken via my mobile phone. I view this technology as a platform to document my life and surroundings in an accessible and personal way. The photos were then printed onto Fujifilm Instax mini film and eventually scanned to capture the complete look and aesthetic of the film. This process allowed me to bring various forms of technology from the past and present and then ultimately create a new point of view for the viewer and myself. The look of this film provides a playful and nostalgic aspect to the work that I believe helps the presentation of the subject matter. These abstract images are able to find constraints within the border of the film and therefore can help with the viewer’s construction of their own idea or concept behind the image without completely manipulating the orientation or visual perspective.
